1. Windows 1.0 was introduced on Nov. 20, 1985 as a graphical operating system for MS-DOS. Many critics felt it placed too much emphasis on mouse input

2. Windows 1.0's features included a graphics painting program (Windows Paint), a word processor (Windows Write), a clock, an appointment calendar and a notepad.

3. The original name was Interface Manager, but Rowland Hanson, head of marketing, thought customers would be more receptive to something called Windows.

4. Windows 95's codename was Chicago. Windows 98's was Memphis. Windows XP's was Whistler. Windows Server 2008's was Longhorn.

5. The Rolling Stones' "Start Me Up" launched the Windows 95 ad campaign, but avant-garde musician Brian Eno created the product's start-up sound.

6. Windows 98 was the first OS to feature Internet Connection Sharing, which allowed several machines to share a single Internet connection.

7. Vista was released in 2007, five years after its predecessor, Windows XP. That's the longest time between successive Windows desktop operating system releases.

8. Vista's low adoption rate forced Microsoft to keep selling Windows XP until June 2008. Only 8% of corporate users were very satisfied with Vista, but 40% were very satisfied with Windows XP.

9. Well till the 2014, 95% of all the ATMs in the world were still run on Windows XP.

10. With Windows 8, Microsoft's American Customer Satisfaction Index score sank to its lowest level since Windows Vista.

11. Despite its lukewarm public reception, Windows 8 sold 100 million licenses in half a year—more than twice what Windows 95 sold in its entire first year . . .
